The Background

Florence Nightingale asked the following questions:

"What will this world be on August 11, 1999?  And what in 1999 shall we wish to have been doing now?  And what shall we wish not to have been doing now?  What of all the things that we do or say or think, will it have signified that we should have done, or said, or thought, then? And what will it not have signified? ...What will this world be on August 11, 1999?" and then she answered, "What we have made it."

Florence Nightingale, 1873.

In March of 1997, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing adopted a white paper that nursing schools are "change agents" and "keepers" of core values.  It goes on to state that nursing is contextual, holistic in nature, nurtured in human relationships, that nurses attend to the meaning of an illness and that such meaning is vital for the healing process. To quote, "Most unique to nursing, however, will be the profession's continued focus on the whole person across the life span, taking into account developmental, physical and mental health, and spiritual needs in a comprehensive approach to care". (P.5, American Association of Colleges of Nursing Vision of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Education: The Next Decade).  Clearly, these nurse leaders believe that nursing education should be founded in Holistic Nursing principles.

Within this context, several schools have developed curricula consistent with AHNA's Standards of Holistic Nursing Practice.  AHNCC believes that these Schools should be recognized and their graduates facilitated in the Holistic Nursing Certification Process.  Therefore, AHNCC has adopted a School Endorsement Program.  During the fall of 2000, all baccalaureate-nursing schools listed in the Petersons Guide received an invitation to submit documents to AHNCC for review. Those schools that applied and met Endorsement Criteria established by AHNCC for Endorsement were reviewed by AHNCC. Several schools responded and were Endorsed. Others are currently under review. If your school is interested in working toward Endorsement, please contact Margaret Erickson, the Executive Director of AHNCC at 811 Linden Loop, Cedar Park 78613 or by email ahncc@flash.net.

Considerations

Your School should apply for endorsement if:

  • You support certification as a distinction between Baccalaureate and Associate Degree nurses;
  • You wish to have your school identified as one of those who "make things happen".

Requirements and Guidelines

If you choose to apply for Endorsement, your school will need to submit an Application Cover Page, summary statement, your School's philosophy and mission, Curriculum outline , a brief description of courses, a curriculum vita and an application fee. Additional documents may be submitted but are not required. Descriptions of these can be found by scrolling down the page. General guidelines for completing each section are provided. For more information or clarification, please contact us at ahncc@flash.net.

On this page you will need to type in complete information in each of the sections. Note that there must be at least one Certified Holistic Nurse, i.e. HN-BC or AHN-BC before the Program can be considered for Endorsement. If you are applying for Endorsement of your Graduate Program, you must have at least one AHN-BC on the faculty.

This statement should require approximately 1-2 pages of text. The text should indicate how the Program meets criteria for Endorsement. Be sure to include statements regarding the relationship between the Schools Philosophy and AHNA's Philosophy  as well as statements that explain how the Curricula addresses AHNA's Core Values.

A copy of the Program Philosophy and the School's Mission will meet this requirement.

A copy of your Schools catalogue can be sent if it describes the Program and lists individual courses. Otherwise, a copy of the Curriculum outline including course titles and descriptions is required.

While it is not necessary to send a complete set of course syllabi, it is important to send sufficient information so that it is clear how specific courses relate to AHNA Standards of Practice/ Core Values. A single course on Holistic Nursing will not be considered sufficient evidence that the students are being educated as Holistic Nurses, so be sure to show inclusion of Holistic Nursing Values across the program. Copies of AHNA Standards of Practice and Core Values can be obtained from AHNA.org.

This faculty member must be Certified by AHNCC.

Additional documents are not required, but will be reviewed if sent to strengthen an application. For example, you may wish to send examples of student assignments, student experiences, faculty activities, etc.  Remember: It is not required that these materials be submitted.

  • Application fee of $500.00.

Please use the above list of Requirements and related Guidelines to complete your application. It is important that each section is clearly labeled.

No documents will be returned. All submitted materials become the property of AHNCC.
