Anything Can Happen

What else is there to say?  A lot, of course. Let's start with my match report for  Sam's Army .

See below for all of the pictures from the game.  The vast majority of the pics are from Yellow Card Journalism.

Needless to say, after nine years of waiting, it was quite the experience to pull it off on the home turf.

Thanks to Yellow Card Journalism Photos for the pictures - go HERE to see all of the YCJ pictures from this game.

This is about twenty minutes before kickoff.  You can begin to see the section taking shape.  Wade Hinkle's flag display, including his '93 flag for Flight 93.

Dustin Christmann (left) is the founder and President Emeritus of The Inferno, the unofficial supporters of the Dallas Burn.
He is also a supporter of the US National Soccer Teams.
His work laying the foundation of The Inferno was instrumental in one of the most incredible performances of Sam's Army and US supporters.

That is me on the right.

The Match

It was a very tense match - chippy, aggressive and hectic.  Mexico had some early chances, but once the US settled in, they pretty much dominated play other than their finishing, which was lacking.

As for the crowd, the Mexico fans were loud and supportive early, but like Jeonju, the more the US played better, the less vocal they were.  The fans around us tried to keep up - it was all good fun, which was very cool - but by the time we got 35-40 minutes in, it was clear they couldn't hang.  We were simply too vocal, too organized, too dedicated.  (Damn, it feels good to write that!)

Then, deep into injury time, Landon Donovan was taken down outside tbe box on the right side.  At this point, I turned to Stephen Foustus and said, Eddie Pope is going to score right here.

Well, Bobby Convey got over the ball and curled in a great cross that Taylor Twellman put on goal, very reminiscent of our first goal against Portugal in Korea.  As you can see to the right, the keeper made the save.

But as you can see below, he didn't keep Eddie Pope from scoring the game winner.

(For more on the match itself, see HERE for some of the article about the game.)

Bruce and the Boys Thank The Army

This may be my proudest moment on this day.  Topping off what was a wonderful experience for me and all of my Friends in Red, Bruce and most of the team came over to thank us for our efforts.  Who says US fans don't know how to show up?  As we said in Houston under similar circumstances - "Five hundren v.45,000?  We'll take those odds!"

REFERENCES

"Anything Can Happen" is from Prime Mover, a song by Rush, off of their Hold Your Fire album.  "From the point of conception to the moment of truth, at the point of surrender to the burden of proof, from the point of ignition to the final drive - the point of the journey is not to arrive - Anything Can Happen."  Needless to say, while I knew the guys could do it on the field, and I knew we could do it in the stands, it still had to Happen.  Obviously, it did.
