| Coach April Heinrichs has spent the past
two years scouring the USA for new and younger talent to mesh with
the Old Guard that won in '96 and '99. Now as the US will host again, can they hold off an ever stronger field without Shannon MacMillain, lost to an ACL tear in WUSA play? |

Almost, But Not Quite
In what was somewhat not as dramatic as it might have been,
the USA Women's National Team has qualified for the World Cup. Now
it begins for-real.One game short. With the loss to Germany, the US ended up one game short of their goal of winning back to back World Cups. No shame in losing to a really good Germany side that was the better team that night, although there were some issues that April will need to address before the Olympics this summer. The US did beat Canada, 3-1, to take the Bronze. The Challenge is Realized
We now have the schedule. The USA will play against Sweden on September 21 at RFK, Nigeria on September 24 at Legion Field in Philadelphia, and finally against North Korea on September 28 at Columbus Crew Stadium in Ohio. For a detailed look at these opponents, including how they got to the World Cup and their record against the USA, see the MLSnet article. For all the details, go to the Womens' World Cup Resource. The Road to the Cup Is going to be a tough one. Clearly, the
USA is in the toughest group, with the Nos. 5 (Sweden) and 7 (North Korea)
teams in the world, along with the strongest of the weak teams at No. 23
(Nigeria). It will take the best the US has to advance as the winner
of the group -- but by doing so, would most likely avoid Norway or China
until the final, unless either of those teams do not win their groups as
well.
Per CNNSI, this is the current pool of players April will whittle down over the coming months.
THEY'RE IN!
A recent friendly with Norway revealed a new formation (diamond 4-4-2) and some new faces. Is this the revised USA side that will conquer in China? The women won the Gold Cup with a 1-0 win over Canada.
