PORTUGAL
The odds-on favorite to win the group and advance as the first seed, Portugal comes into the World Cup with the 2001 FIFA Player of the Year, Luis Figo.

Portugal is ranked 4th by FIFA, and here I believe it. This is an incredible group of players who made one heck of a run in Euro 2000.

The picture above is from the USA-Jamaica qualifyier. Here we are singing, "You'll Never Walk Alone," in honor of those who supported the US with that phrase from across the pond after September 11. And yes, that is Elvis -- he didn't die, he just became a soccer fan!

Portugal starts off against the Yanks on June 5 in Suwon, then travel to Jeonju on June 10 to take on Poland before finishing up the first round against the host nation of Korea on June 14 in Incheon.

Right out of the gate, those with the team were saying that they weren't going to get overconfident and that the group would be a challenge. It will be interesting to see if they can hold themselves up to that. All three of Portugal's competitors in the first round have the ability to tag a loss on them if they don't show up to play. Considering Portugal's limited experience in the World Cup, they may not have the opportunity to waste this one.

Links are up. I highly recommend the third link, the article from MLSnet. This is the kind of content level I want to get to fot each of the Yank's WC '02 opponents.
