Words There are numerous versions of the ballad, "Greensleeves," but the traditional Elizabethan version was the song licensed to Richard Jones. Authorship The authorship of "Greensleeves" is a matter of great speculation. This mysterious ballad has created much controversy from the sixteenth century until today. The war of the printers The first release of the ballad, "Greensleeves," created a tug-of-war among the printers of Queen Elizabeth's day. There may have been issues of both finances and reputation at stake in the war of the printers.
